history of our building

In 1908 the St Edmundsbury Weaving Works moved to Letchworth Garden City, their factory being the building now known as St. Christopher House. The company was started in 1902 by Edmund Hunter, in Haselmere, Surrey . The St. Edmundsbury Weaving Works on Ridge Road was designed by Edmund Hunter with assistance from Barry Parker.  

 The company produced woven textiles, mostly in silk in the Arts and Crafts style, for private and ecclesiastical clients. Textiles were produced on both hand and power looms. Their work was produced for clients that included St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace

The building was taken over by the St. Christopher Press. The St. Christopher Press had originally started as a small project for St. Christopher School pupils interested in learning about printing. This grew into a small business, becoming a private company in 1939, though links were maintained with the school. The press had several premises, but moved to the building in Ridge Road in 1954. The press remained here until 1971 when the business closed.
