DVD Support

If you are having problems playing DVD-R it could be the player that’s incompatible, not the disc.

The first thing to keep in mind is that the disc you receive from us is DVD-R compliant, our format is DVD-R (for General Version 2.0) as specified by the DVD Consortium a group comprised of the ten companies who originated the DVD format. We test all discs prior to despatch but it is always possible to get faulty media which we are totally happy to replace without charge.

Will my disc work on my player?

The easy answer is that over 95% of the DVD players on the market today will play your DVD. These players are generally produced by the major manufacturers and are 100% DVD compliant. So what about the other 5%? Well, some manufacturers, in a rush to get products to market, build their machines to work on most discs, realising that some features of DVD may not work. Many of these machines have problems playing certain Hollywood titles as well as DVD-R discs which are the only reasonable media option when creating “short run” or “one off” DVD production. Replicated DVD’s (Like the ones you rent in the video stores) are 100% compatible but most manufactures have a 1000 disc production minimum. So why don't we create replicated discs? The initial mastering process is extremely expensive, £1500 to £3000.

I have a “first generation” player. Will my disc work?

First generation DVD players are defined as those introduced in 1997, the year DVD was introduced to the world. Many of the players that first hit the streets are not 100% compliant with the entire DVD specification. The number of these players that are incompatible is substantially higher than 5%.

If your disc does not work here are some possible solutions:

(1) Try the disc in another player.
(2) Email us for advice.
(3) If you find your player is not DVD-R compatible, and you bought the player recently, you may be able to return it for a new, compliant player.
(4) Buy a new player, players are now very cheap but check it supports DVD-R.

Simply return the disc to us and we will refund your money. To date a few customers have had players that weren’t compatible. We recommend you verify your player(s) compatibility before placing large quantity orders by ordering a single title.

The DVD R Format

General Information :
Two types, DVD-R and DVD+R, discs are write-once discs.

(1) DVD-R for General Version 2.0 - THIS IS OUR FORMAT
First there was the DVD-R Version 1.0 that provided a 3.95 Gb, later the 4.7 Gb disc was released as Version 1.9. Now DVD-R Version 2.0 media and drives are available. Version 2.0 media is 4.7 Gb (1.9 and 1.0 media can be written in 2.0 drives as well).
VERSION 1 - we DO NOT supply this format (yet)
The first version of this format had a capacity of 3.95GB WE DO NOT SUPPLY THIS FORMAT
VERSION 2 - we DO supply this format
We supply the general purpose (version) of the discs which are intended for use by consumers with a capacity of 4.7GB.

(2) DVD+R We DO NOT produce DVD+R
DVD+R discs should be called +R as they are not recognised by the DVD Forum. This format, which is essentially very similar to DVD-R, was developed by Philips and Sony. It is an extension of the DVD+RW format supported by the DVD+RW Alliance comprising HP, Philips, Ricoh, Sony, Yamaha, Verbatim/Mitsubishi Chemical, Dell and Thomson.
